Our mission
Earthling is the creation of New Zealand engineer John McGettigan: a 12-metre serial-hybrid power catamaran built to prove that long-range, low-impact cruising is achievable without compromise. The E-40 runs on twin 50 kW electric drives fed by a rooftop solar array, a 44 kWh battery bank, and compact DC generator-chargers for extended offshore passages. Having completed its New Zealand proving period, the E-40 is now on an active European campaign.
Why Earthling
Propulsion is always electric; the diesel generators charge the batteries rather than driving the shafts directly. This means the ride character remains silent and smooth regardless of whether the generators are running.
Based on Alan Carwardine's Stealth 36 powercat hull form, the E-40's slender hulls minimise drag and enable efficient cruising at 8–10 knots on modest power, the same principle that makes sailing catamarans fast.
A flexible 4 kW solar array mounted on the coach roof continuously replenishes the battery bank underway, extending all-electric range and reducing generator runtime in sunny conditions.
