Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. was founded on 1 July 1955 and is headquartered at Iwata, Shizuoka, Japan, where its marine business builds petrol outboards spanning 2.5 hp portables to the V8 XTO Offshore. Its one electric outboard is HARMO, a 48 V system whose rim drive motor sits around the outer edge of the propeller instead of in a hub, which Yamaha says generates greater thrust at low speed than a hub propeller of the same size. HARMO is sold as a package with Digital Electric Steering and Helm Master EX joystick control rather than as a standalone motor, and Yamaha rates it at 3.1 kW maximum impeller shaft output against a 9.9 hp petrol comparison.
